From way back when real estate was advertised in local newspapers there have always been words and/or phrases that we were not allowed to use because of Fair Housing laws. Saying “walk to” or “master bedroom” or “his and her closets” are all insensitive if not illegal. Laws have changed and what we say in our ads has changed as well.
As an aside it was reported this week that a Brokerage in Washington is recommending that their agents advise seller’s to remove any American Flags in or outside of the home in order to keep the house neutral and non-political.
Fair Housing Laws are regulated by HUD – Housing and Urban Development. Some of the phrases we shouldn’t use are very obviously violations but some others can be viewed as insensitive and should not be used.
