During the Mardi Gras Parades there is an area that starts in Uptown and runs through the Garden District to Canal in the French Quarter, that if you live in you are trapped. From either Jefferson or Napolean Avenues between St. Charles Avenue and the river to Canal Blvd in the French Quarter you can’t go anywhere.
You can’t cross over St. Charles and on each end you can’t cross Napolean or Jefferson because of Mardi Gras floats and massive amounts of people and traffic.
There are no openings, the parades have precedence and this area is blocked. If it is necessary to go get food you must do whatever shopping you need to do in the early morning because there is no way as the beginning of the parades start.
I have heard this area referred to as “The Box”.
