FFrom the 19th century to today the Warehouse District has been transformed many times beginning with warehouses to store coffee and grain and other items that were shipped to the Port of New Orleans. Beginning in 1976 a new transformation began with the opening of the Contemporary Arts Center. Today there are several museums and more than 25 galleries. The Warehouse District is known as “Soho of the South” referring to the area in New York City where an entire warehouse district was transformed with living lofts, condominiums, edgy restaurants and boutiques.
