Yesterday a young gentleman by the name of Jonathan called me asking for information about a property he found on the internet. When he called I asked him if he had an agent and he said no I am just calling the name at the bottom of the page. I explained to him that I am not the listing agent and that he is looking at listings from all of the agency’s through a sharing of listings. I asked him if he wanted to speak to the listing agent and he said no. Since he didn’t have an agent and he understood he wan’t speaking to the listing agent I proceeded to ask him what he wanted to know.
He gave me an address for a condo and said he wanted to know about the roof, the age of the building, the square footage..I said fine and proceeded to pull the listing up and we chatted for a while. There was some information that he wanted that wasn’t readily available and a call to the listing agent was necessary and I called and got the information and called this gentleman back explaining that the property was not available.
Ten minutes later I get a call from a Christina G. who is a licensee in Baton Rouge saying she would like to make an appointment at this property for her buyer. I asked her if her buyer’s name was Jonathan L. and she said yes and with glee says “he is my boy friend”.
I looked Christina up on the internet and discovered she has had her license since November, 2011. Christina and Jonathan’s problem is that Christina is in Baton Rouge and does not have access to the listing information down here in New Orleans because there are two separate multiple listing services. So Jonathan calls agents to get the information, doesn’t tell the truth that he has agent, and then Christina calls to make the appointment to show the property. Deceptive and Unethical. Lying is not the way to go.
Christina is new to the business and I wonder if she understands there is no obligation to share the commission that is posted on the multiple listing service with non members of the MLS even though she is licensed.
While consumers are always complaining about Real Estate agents it works both ways and no the consumer is not always right. It is not alright to lie, it is not alright to use an agent for information. This is being posted so that if any other agents read this and get a call from a Jonathan L (504-289-****) they are forewarned that he lies.
Buyers searching for properties should always contact their own agent seeking out information.
I will say that the great majority of people who contact me online are honest and respectful and this is not a reflection of consumers or anyone else, just Jonathan and Christina.
