One of the designations I have received is the Senior Real Estate Specialist. Senior homeowners have unique challenges when it comes to staying in their homes or moving. This course taught me how to handle and help seniors who can’t stay in their homes. The article I am posting here is about seniors and falls which is one of the major causes of death in the 65 and older age group. While the article discusses what is being done in a nursing home to help seniors avoid falls and help them maneuver some of the suggestions could be used for seniors who refuse to move (stubborn) or are living with children or other relatives helping to keep them safe. Floor lighting, black toilet seats, creating definition at the bottom of a stair case are all things that can be incorporated in a Senior’s or relatives home.
And more than 2.4 million people over 65 were treated in emergency departments for injuries from falls in 2012 alone, an increase of 50 percent over a decade. All told, in the decade from 2002-2012, more than 200,000 Americans over 65 died after falls. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in that age group.
Some facilities have begun to install floor lighting, much like that on airplanes, that automatically turns on when a resident gets out of bed, illuminating a pathway to the bathroom
If you are a senior and thinking of selling but feel completely overwhelmed at the thought, perhaps I can help….
